Darragh Martin is a story of lifelong, obsessive
love, spanning the years from the 1960s to the present day. It
is also something of a homage to Wuthering Heights but with a
rural Scottish setting. My parents were born romantics and I was
trundled over Haworth moors while I was still in my pushchair
so it’s in my blood and bones. The novel is not an imitation
– how would I dare? But Emily was certainly my inspirarion.

I am currently working
on a new play Some Matters Concerning the Earl of Bothwell.
He enjoyed the company of women, intellectually as well as physically.
Older women too. All this in sixteenth century Scotland. No wonder
they never forgave him for it….
And I am planning
a new novel called The Phoenix, which is also
to do with Mary Queen of Scots. There’s another antique
textile involved – naturally! - a mysterious picture which
is actually in my possession. But this is not going to be an historical
novel – instead, it will be the story of a strange discovery
in the present that illuminates a long held family secret in the
past.
